What Is Card Counting?

Card counting is a legal technique that tracks the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the deck or shoe. When more high cards remain, the player has a statistical advantage — natural blackjacks become more likely, dealer bust rates increase, and doubling down becomes more profitable. Card counters raise their bets in these favorable situations and lower them when the deck is rich in low cards.

Contrary to popular belief, card counting doesn't require a photographic memory. Modern systems like Hi-Lo use a simple running tally that anyone can learn with enough practice.

How the Hi-Lo System Works

Hi-Lo assigns a point value to every card dealt:

As each card is dealt face up, you add its tag to your running count. A positive running count means more low cards have left the shoe — meaning proportionally more high cards remain. A negative count is the reverse.

The True Count: Adjusting for Multiple Decks

A running count of +8 means something very different in a single-deck game versus a six-deck shoe. To normalize the count, you convert it to a true count by dividing the running count by the estimated number of decks remaining:

True Count = Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining

Most strategy and betting decisions are based on the true count rather than the raw running count. A true count of +2 or higher is generally where a player begins to have an edge over the house.

Bet Spreading

The point of counting is to bet more when you have an advantage and less when you don't. A common approach is a 1-to-8 bet spread — for example, betting $10 at a neutral count and $80 at a very high true count. The wider the spread, the more profitable counting becomes — but it also draws more casino attention.

Basic Strategy Deviations

Advanced counters also adjust their playing decisions based on the count. Known as "indices" (famously documented in the "Illustrious 18"), these deviations tell you when to deviate from basic strategy based on the true count. The most impactful examples include:

  • Taking insurance at a true count of +3 or higher
  • Standing on hard 16 vs. dealer 10 at TC ≥ 0
  • Standing on hard 15 vs. dealer 10 at TC ≥ +4

For most counters, mastering basic strategy deviations significantly boosts the overall edge.

Other Card Counting Systems

Hi-Lo is a "balanced" level-one system, meaning the count returns to zero after a full deck. Other systems offer trade-offs between complexity and accuracy:

  • KO (Knock-Out): Unbalanced system that removes the need to calculate a true count. Easier to use, slightly less powerful.
  • Omega II: A level-two system that assigns values of +2 or −2 to some cards. More accurate but harder to execute under casino conditions.
  • Wong Halves: A level-three fractional system — highly accurate but very demanding to use in practice.

Most experts recommend starting with Hi-Lo and only progressing to more complex systems if you've truly mastered the basics.

Realistic Expectations

A proficient Hi-Lo counter playing in good conditions might gain an edge of around 0.5–1.5% over the house. This is a real, mathematical edge — but it means:

  • Short-term results will still vary wildly due to variance.
  • It requires hundreds of hours of practice before casino-level proficiency.
  • Casinos watch for counting behavior and can ask counters to leave or restrict their bets — it's legal for them to do so.
  • Results are only meaningful over thousands of hours of play.

Card counting is a genuine skill, but it's not a guaranteed income stream. Treat it as an intellectual challenge with a realistic edge — not a shortcut to riches.
